Becoming a Counselor for Eating Disorders

Recent data shows that nearly 6% of people living in the United States are battling one of the many different variations of eating disorders. Unlike other disorders, eating disorders seem to affect people of all different cultures, ethnicities, genders and ages. Being a counselor that helps individuals with eating disorders requires information of all different cultures, age brackets, social classes and more. Since there is no one specific “type” of person who is affected by eating disorders there is a lot of research that goes into being a counselor for this type of illness.

As a counselor you must be prepared to address eating disorders and other body related issues. As a counselor you can approach this in a group setting or on a one on one basis. A counselor who is educated and well informed on the topic of eating disorders will prove to be an instrumental part of an individual’s recovery. It is important to remember that as a counselor involved in eating disorders treatment there will be many emotions and feelings coming out during your sessions. As counselor it is important to remain neutral and act as nothing more than a source of information and support system. Eating disorders involve a long recovery period, filled with counseling and therapy. It is important that as a counselor you provide the best service that you can.
