Things You Can do to Help Prevent Your Child Develop an Eating Disorder

Eating disorders are a painful thing for anything to go through. However having a child experience the effects of anorexia and bulimia is particularly hard to go through. While sometimes parents have no control over whether or not their child  go through the effects of eating disorders, there are a few thins that can be done to educate not only yourself but your children on anorexia and bulimia and other types of eating disorders.

One thing parents can do to prevent eating disorders in their home in talk about your body in positive way. If you children constantly hear you focusing on the negative or parts you are not happy with it will make them focus on the negative as well. This could be an indicator in your child one day battling anorexia and bulimia. Another thing you can do is educate your children on the effects of a healthy diet and exercise routine. Eating disorders more often than start because of emotional disturbances but can also come about because of social acceptance and media attention. Anorexia and Bulimia are the two most common paths taken when a young adult is trying become someone they feel will be more socially accepted.

Help your children see that there is not just “one type” of person in this world. People come in all shapes and sizes and that’s ok. If all a child sees and hears are things involving prejudice against different weights and shapes they may feel pressure to look into anorexia and bulimia and see what types of eating disorders are out there. Avoid watching and reading things in front of your children that glorify anorexia and bulimia. There is nothing positive about eating disorders. Unfortunately today there are many men and women who feel anorexia and bulimia are there only hope of looking like there favorite celebrity. Essentially the key to prevention is education. Help your child see the world through positive, nonjudgmental eyes and this will help in the fight against anorexia and bulimia and other such eating disorders.
